P & H Delphin Ocean Play Sea Kayaks
The Delphin has been designed as an ‘Ocean Play’ kayak. The Delphin has been designed to perform in a class of its own with a new set of rules. The Delphin has a very distinctive look and two of the characteristics you notice at first sight are the shape of the bow and how much rocker it has.
The hull of the Delphin can only be described as unique. The bow has hard chines and middle line V which phase out towards the centre of the hull to form a flatter hull section which then goes in to softer chines at the rear. The inbuilt skeg goes all the way to the rear of the kayak to maximise waterline length and straight line speed. The Delphin has the P&H skeg fitted as standard which is smooth and easy to operate from the skeg slider.
The deck of the Delphin has an inverted V shape at the bow to help prevent purling and increase the rate it can resurface when if the nose digs in. The cockpit is situated further back than in most kayaks and the bow just kisses over the top of the water. The Delphin has a large oval rear hatch, round front hatch with lots of storage and small day hatch in front of the cockpit.
The cockpit has been outfitted using Pyranhas connect 30 outfitting which is used in all their top end white water spec kayaks. This means that you get a snug fit with plenty of adjustment allowing you to relax on longer day trips but also means you can lock yourself in if you are hitting the surf and tidal races. The outfitting has hip pads, ratchet adjustable backrest, fully adjustable footrests and thigh braces too.
On the water the Delphin comes alive, it is faster than you assume it will be and has rock solid stability. The Delphin has excellent acceleration when catching a wave which means you will find yourself going for bigger and bigger waves and the grin on your face becomes permanent. You will be able to carve turns you wouldn’t try in a normal Sea Kayak. With all that rocker it is obvious that the Delphin turns well, but when you stick it on edge the stern slides round effortlessly and you will be facing the way you want to go with no effort at all.
Once you have finished playing and you need to cover some distance, depending on the conditions, deploy your skeg and the Delphin is more than capable of racking up the sea miles. With the ample storage overnight and weekend trips are always an option too.
Although the Delphin has been primarily designed for Ocean Play it is capable of so much more. If you love exploring coastlines, going in and out of rocks and caves, catching waves and surfing then the Delphin is the kayak for you.
