Cetus in Greek Mythology means “Sea Monster” and is often called “Whale” today, something which this Sea Kayak isn’t. The Cetus is a beautiful, sleek and Low Profile Sea kayak.
The Cetus is a swede form Sea Kayak, with the wider point located behind the cockpit. This is a design which gives speed through the water whilst still giving a broad beam.
The rear of the Cetus’ hull has a long built in skeg to give a longer waterline length for speed. When the kayak is edged correctly this is released and makes the Cetus extremely manoeuvrable. Under the cockpit the hull is flatter with a slight V which moves in to a rounder section near the bow. The bow is reasonably narrow which means you can get your paddle forward and in close for efficient forward paddling.
The Cetus comes as standard with an adjustable skeg but can have a rudder fitted if preferred. The skeg is operated on a toothed skeg slider which pulls the skeg up and holds it in place. A shock chord pulls the skeg down. This system is extremely light and effective and eliminates the risk of any snagging or kinked wires.
The Cetus has four hatches, a large rear oval hatch, a rear day hatch, round front hatch and a small moulded in pod just within easy reach from the cockpit, excellent for those essential safety items. All hatch covers are tethered on.
The Cetus has a keyhole shaped cockpit and due to its length makes it easy to get in and out of. The seat is comfortable with a slight rise in to support the back of your legs. The backrest tensions on a simple webbing and D buckle system and is high enough for support but low enough for re entry during rescues. As with any cockpit customising it to fit to your own comfort will give you the feel and control you need in any paddling condition. The thigh braces in the cockpit area allow for a comfortable range of paddling positions.
The footrests are fully adjustable and can easily be adjusted whilst sitting in the kayak.  A large foot plate means that you get a comfortable purchase when paddling.
The deck is outfitted in the usual P&H high standard with a Silva Compass recess, deck lines and elastics, security/tow line bar and paddle shaft recess behind the cockpit.
On the water the Cetus is quick to accelerate up to speed as you would expect from swede form kayaks.  The quick acceleration of the Cetus means that when you want to play in a swell you can catch almost any wave and when landing in a surf zone you can use this acceleration to your advantage to make your landing controlled and predictable.
The Cetus’ has good stability at rest and also on edge but really comes in to its own when you get in to more challenging seas.  In the bouncier conditions the Cetus even gives you the confidence to be able to use your camera. When edging the kayak you’ll also find the Cetus’ stability allows you to really crank the boat over and turn within a couple of paddle strokes. On a wave only a small edge is needed to allow you to steer the Cetus. This positive edge control will help the less experienced become the experienced.
Rolling the Cetus is pleasure, it has a low back deck for those who like to lie back and once up the Cetus settles nicely even when loaded or unloaded.
In conclusion the Cetus is a brilliant sea kayak made in Britain, the Cetus is as good loaded as it is unloaded to paddle. The Cetus is well built as you would expect from P&H and can be used as a fast day cruiser as well as a long distance, expedition kayak.  The Cetus will suit a wide range of paddlers and abilities. P&H offer a range of custom options from fitting a compass to moving bulkheads. The Cetus now comes in 3 sizes, LV, MV and HV so there is a size to fit everyone.  Once you have decided which size you need the hardest choice will be what colour to order it in.
